Individual Tax Return
(1040)
A straightforward return handled carefully. A complicated one handled correctly. We prepare individual federal and state returns for clients at every level of complexity.
Who we work with
We prepare individual federal and state tax returns for clients across a range of situations — W-2 earners, retirees, investors, beneficiaries who received inheritances, and anyone whose return has become more complicated than a software filing can handle well.
Because much of our work involves estates, trusts, and older taxpayers, we're experienced with the situations that trip up generalist preparers: K-1s from multiple sources, inherited assets with stepped-up basis, retirement income with IRMAA implications, and multi-state filing obligations.
What we prepare
- Federal Form 1040 — all filing statuses and schedules
- State returns — all states where you have a filing obligation
- W-2 income, self-employment, rental income, investment income
- K-1s from partnerships, S corporations, estates, and trusts
- Capital gains, sales of real estate, inherited property
- Retirement distributions — RMDs, pension income, inherited IRAs
- Social Security income and the calculations that affect its taxability
- Itemized deductions, charitable contributions, mortgage interest
- Grantor trust filings — when a trust is treated as owned by the grantor for income tax purposes, income flows directly to your personal return and must be reported correctly
Year-round availability
We're available year-round — not just in April. If you have a question in July about a distribution you took, or you receive an IRS notice in November, you can reach us. We don't disappear after tax season.
What we need to get started
- Most recent year's tax return (essential) — last 3 years preferred, especially for a new client, to check for carryforwards and missed items
- All income documents: W-2s, 1099s, K-1s, SSA-1099, 1099-R
- Records of any estimated tax payments made during the year
- Documentation for deductions you plan to claim
- Any IRS or state notices received during the year
